Army, to supply an annual gold medal (valued at $25) for excellence in oratory; gives Faculty rules for the contest. Lists winners: 1885: Joseph C. Bryan; 1886: Miss Lloyd Allen; 1887: Mr. Maurice Moore; 1888: Mr. Fred Chancellor; 1889: Miss Alice Kelso; 1890: Edwyn E. Watts. THE PRESIDENT'S PRIZE: Prize medal valued at $10 to the member of the Senior Class passing the highest examination in Latin, awarded at Commencement. Winners: Albertine Moore '86; Maurice Moore '88; Harry B. Keith '89. Right page: HINDMAN PRIZE: Prize of $10 offered by Dr. Walter M. Hindman of Vincennes to the member of the First Academic Class with the highest average grade over past two years. MILITARY DEPARTMENT: Describes the formation of the Military Department, history of volunteer companies drilling during the past few years; newly organized under Prof. William J. Spillman. OFFICERS: E. E. Watts, Captain; Edgar McClure, 1st Lieutenant; John Blair, 2nd Lieutenant; Albert Johnson, 1st Sergeant; Andrew Berry, Quartermaster. Describes resignation of John Blair, competitive drill contest with Edward F. Tindolph winning the replacement spot; Board members and other gentlemen's donations for the purchasing of U. S. Government arms, creation of an armory, the handsome uniform, schedule of drill three days a week. Lists advantages of drill: systematic exercise, manly bearing, steadiness, attention to personal neatness, knowledge of military tactics. Describes the University's policy to make the military an attractive feature; prize drill at the end of the year for a silver medal.
