Samuel Scott, including the elementary branches; confiscation of land by the State; conversion of V.U. into the "Knox County Seminary; revival of Vincennes University in 1838; recovery of the original endowment; reopening of the school; beginning of female Dept. in 1856; co-education in 1870; building at the present location (5th and Busseron Sts. ) in 1870, the west wing in 1879, and the auxiliary building now being used for the library and some classes; describes increasing attendance, improved equipment, differentiation of departments of instruction. THE LIBRARY: Describes library collection of 5345 bound volumes and 1460 pamphlets, occupying half of the first floor of the Hall, with two stack rooms, two small rooms for cataloguing and private study, and a well-lighted reading room, including a card catalogue, reference books, periodicals (36, including the two local newspapers); numerous college and society papers; rapid growth of the library; careful selection of books.
