Left page: THE JAPANESE FRIENDSHIP GARDEN: Text: Describes the Sept. 1, 1963, dedication, a gift from the students of Kochi University in Japan after a visit from V.U. official, Rotarian Curtis G. Shake. The two lanterns were ordered from stone masons of Matsue, weighed about 2000 pounds and were delivered with the assistance of the U.S. Navy and Rotary Clubs of Kochi, Kochi Minami, and Vincennes. Five students from Waseda University participated in the ceremony together with Susumu Nakagawa, Ministry of the Embassy of Japan, Washington, D.C, personal representative of His Excellency, Ryuji Takushi, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary to the U.S. from Japan. The five boys sang their school song before Mr. Nakagawa spoke of the origin and meaning of the lanterns. The visitors were entertained at a public reception after the ceremony and later at a buffet supper by Dr. and Mrs. Beckes. Top left picture: Judge Curtis G. Shake showing Noboru Tajama the lanterns. The Vincennes News Agency through Mr. Charles Teising and his staff cooperated in every way to make the Fair a success. Text: Describes the Fourth Annual Paperback Book Fair in Green Auditorium on the weekend of November 15-18, including a Charles Scribner & Sons display showing the steps in the evolution of a book, a display by the V.U. Library featuring books pertaining to the early history of Knox County and Vincennes, the local chapter of American Pen Women, and guest speaker Dr. John W. Allen, professor emeritus from the University of Southern Illinois, author of "Legends and Lore of Southern Illinois." On Sunday, the Fair featured Rev. Carl Scherzer, Evansville Deaconess Hospital Chaplain and former local minister, introducing and autographing his publication, "Ministering to the Physically Sick." Jim & Marie McQuaid wish to thank everyone who helped in any way and hope to make the Fair bigger and more successful in 1964 and future years.
